(A) TRAINING:
 Training Medical interns in primary care medicine: To make the young medical graduates aware of the common health problems as they exist in the community and make them able to diagnose, treat most of the ailments independently and refer cases when necessary.
 Training the medical students and interns in research methodology.
 Training and Retraining the Primary Health Care Professionals and grass-root level workers in antenatal, intranatal, postnatal breast-feeding and common health problems in the community.

(B) TEACHING:
 Delivering lectures to the Undergraduate & Post-Graduate Medical Students regarding health care related issues, conducting practical demonstrations, field visits, clinico-social case presentations, student seminars, and problem solving exercises in Epidemiology, Nutrition, Maternal & Child Health and Environmental Health.
 Lectures on community health to Undergraduate Physiotherapy Students.
 Lectures on community health to Undergraduate Nursing Students.

Actively participated in Departmental and externally funded research projects. Involved in conceptualisation of the topic, planning and designing, organization of work, data collection, analysis and interpretation. The following are the topics of research projects undertaken:

(1) Assessment of injection practices in India (2002-2003): An India-CLEN Program Evaluation Network Study.
Funding agency: India - CLEN
Duration: 2 months (April –May 2003)
My role was to conduct specific observation and client exit interview.

(2) A study on Prevalence of Depressive Disorders in geriatric population of Udupi Taluk, Karnataka (INDIA):
(MD dissertation submitted to Manipal University, previously known as Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE)
Duration: 1 year (December 2002- December 2003)
My roles were to prepare the research plan and a detailed literature review, Selection, designing and pre-testing the questionnaires, Organization of fieldwork, Data collection, tabulation and analysis & Writing the final report.

(3) Double Blind Randomized Phase IV Clinical trial to assess the immunogenicity and reactogenicity of three commercially available DNA recombinant Hepatitis B Vaccine in adults:
Funding agency: Serum Institute of India, Pune.
Duration: 9 months. January 2003-September 2003
My role was to immunize the participants and collection of blood samples for Antibody titres and regular follow-up of the participants.

(4) WHO SEARO sponsored project to evaluate the Draft Field Guide for Health Workers on Priority Communicable Diseases in the Community:
This project involved translation of the manual into Kannada, training 24 Health Workers using the translated version of the manual and evaluation of the Kannada version of the manual. The project comprised of training period of two weeks and evaluation period of four weeks.

My role was to evaluate the training of the health workers in the field setting.

(5) Prevalence of Goitre among school children and general population and estimation of iodine content of common salt in Dakshina Kannada and Belgaum Districts of Karnataka, INDIA

(18) Students & faculties of SMIMS had initiated a community-based cross-sectional study at Ranipool entitled, “KAP study among women of reproductive age group on reproductive & child health (RCH) services” during 1st September to 31st December 2005. This project was actively supervised by Dr. Ankur Barua, Assistant Prof. of Community Medicine & Dr. Amit Chakravorty, Additional Prof. of Pharmacology, SMIMS along with Miss Shuva Das Gupta, Consultant, College of Nursing, SMIMS.

(19) Students & faculties of SMIMS had initiated a community-based cross-sectional study at Ranipool entitled, “KAP study on substance abuse among representative sample from general population of East Sikkim” during 1st September to 31st December 2005. This project was actively supervised by Dr. Amit Chakravorty, Additional Prof. of Pharmacology & Dr. Ankur Barua, Assistant Prof. of Community Medicine, SMIMS along with Miss Shuva Das Gupta, Consultant, College of Nursing, SMIMS.

(20) On 4th September 2005, a health education intervention project was conducted on “Prevention of Acute Diarrhoeal Diseases (ADD)” in Ranipool area by students & faculty of SMIMS. This project was actively supervised by Dr. Ankur Barua, Assistant Prof. of Community Medicine, SMIMS along with Miss Shuva Das Gupta, Consultant, College of Nursing, SMIMS.

(21) On 13th November 2005, a vocational training project was organized under direct supervision of Dr. Ankur Barua, Assistant Prof. of Community Medicine, SMIMS for “Detection of Visual Impairments in school children” for the staffs & faculty of Senior Secondary School, Passingdong, North Sikkim. Snellen’s charts were donated to school on the occasion. Pre-testing & Post-testing of the participants was also done.
(22) On 22nd January 2006, under direct supervision of Dr. Ankur Barua, Assistant Prof. of Community Medicine, SMIMS and Miss Shuva Das Gupta, Consultant, College of Nursing, SMIMS, a health education intervention project was conducted at Ranipool on “Mode of Transmission of Infections.” Enthusiastic students of SMIMS participated as resource persons in providing health education & conducting Pre-testing & Post-testing of the participants.
(23) On 19th February 2006, under direct supervision of Dr. Ankur Barua, Assistant Prof. of Community Medicine, SMIMS and Miss Shuva Das Gupta, Consultant, College of Nursing, SMIMS, a health education intervention project was conducted at Ranipool on “Tuberculosis in Community.” Enthusiastic students of SMIMS participated as resource persons in providing health education& conducting Pre-testing & Post-testing of the participants.

No. 510547070) had completed & submitted an original scientific project report entitled, “The impact of culture management in mergers and acquisitions of IT oriented companies” under direct supervision of Prof. Dr. Raman Kumar Jha, professor of Physics, SMIT, Majitar, Sikkim. This project report was accepted by Sikkim Manipal University towards his partial fulfilment of the requirements for Master of Business Administration in Information Technology (MBA IT). Duration of this project was from 1st January 2006 to 30th June 2006.
(25) Ms. Romila Syangden (Reg. No. 520433398) had completed & submitted an original scientific project report entitled, “Bioethics of Stem Cell Research” under direct supervision of Dr. Ankur Barua, Assistant Prof. of Community Medicine, SMIMS. This project report was accepted by Sikkim Manipal University towards her partial fulfilment of the requirements for Bachelor of Sciences in Biotechnology (BSc. BT). Duration of this project was from 15th March-15th June 2007.
(26) Dr. Jayanta Hazarika had undertaken a research project entitled, “A study on Determinants of Low Birth Weight Babies in Central Referral Hospital of East Sikkim” under direct supervision of Dr. Ankur Barua, Assistant Prof. of Community Medicine, SMIMS. This project was accepted by Diplomat National Board (D.N.B.) towards his partial fulfilment of the requirements for D.N.B. Degree in Paediatrics. This project was completed on 31st May 2009.

(28) Dr. Sushil Kumar Agarwal had undertaken a research project entitled, “Socio-Demographic Correlates of Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Adult Population of east Sikkim: A Case-Control Study” under direct supervision of Dr. Ankur Barua, Assistant Prof. of Community Medicine, SMIMS. (9) Actively participated in organizing & conducting a free School Health check-up camp for students of Sikkim-Kalyan Ashram at Zongu village, North Sikkim on 13th November 2005 to celebrate the Children’s Day that year.

(10) Actively participated in organizing & conducting a free health check-up cum drug distribution camp at Busuk village, East Sikkim on 12th February 2006. This camp catered to 130 needy patients. Free Blood Grouping & Haemoglobin estimation along with screening for obesity & refractory errors of eye were done for all patients.

(11) Actively participated in organizing a Science exhibition was organized at Community Hall Complex of Gangtok, East Sikkim on 27th February 2006 to celebrate the “National Science Day 2006” for commemorating the discovery of “Raman Effect” by Sir. C.V. Raman. This programme was sponsored by the Sikkim State Council of Science & Technology, Gangtok, Sikkim.

(12) Actively participated in organizing & conducting an awareness camp to observe the “World Tuberculosis Day” along with a free health check-up cum drug distribution camp at Sikkim Kalyan Ashram, Ranipool of East Sikkim on 24th March 2006. This camp catered to 126 needy patients. Free Blood Grouping & Haemoglobin estimation along with screening for obesity & refractory errors of eye were done for all patients.

This camp catered to 110 needy patients from 10 villages around Ranipool. (15) Actively participated in organizing & conducting an awareness camp to observe the “World No Tobacco Day” along with a free health check-up camp at Central Referral Hospital of East Sikkim on 31st May 2006. This camp catered to 116 new patients.

This camp catered to 105 needy patients from 4 villages around Ranipool. Screening for obesity & refractory errors of eye were done for all patients.

(3) Delivered a Guest Lecture on “Unity in Diversity: The Cultural heritage of India” and “Guidelines for Personality Development” at “Our lady of Fatima School of Villaverde ” of Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines on 16th July 2007.
(4) Delivered a Health Talk on “Life-skill Education in HIV / AIDS Prevention” at the workshop on “Science Spectrum for School Children”, organized by Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search in “Sikkim-Manipal Institute of Technology” of Majitar, Sikkim on 28th July 2007.
